
The “Kanivu” is a registered social and voluntary organization founded by the Head Load Workers Union of Cochin with an objective to extend financial assistance and other help to those who are suffering from ailments like Cancer, Kidney problems and Heart diseases. The organization was formed following a member of the union was affected by cancer and was faced with financial difficulties for treatment. Then a group of his colleagues joined hands to extend the necessary assistance to him and later on they have decided to register an association for humanitarian activities.
On 11th September, 2016, the Kanivu had organized a function at Kochi at which 39 persons suffering from Cancer, Kidney ailments and Heart problems were given financial assistance. The assistance they give ranges from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 10,000 at present. The organization now has about 1000 members and they contribute a fixed percentage of their wages to the fund for such needs. A scrutiny committee is also formed to verify the genuineness of the applications for help and it is considered on the basis of merit like financial position and income of the applicant, before extending such help.
Now, the organization is planning to buy an Ambulance equipped with Ventilator facilities and donate it to the Government Hospital, Kochi for free service to the needy. However, the Hospital Administration which will operate the Ambulance may fix a nominal fee for its maintenance. Presently, the organization is also supplying free food to the in-patients at the Government Hospital.
